Canyon is a city in, and the county seat of, Randall County, Texas, United States. The population was 13,303 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo, Texas, metropolitan statistical area. Canyon is the home of West Texas A&M University and Panhandle–Plains Historical Museum, and the world-famous outdoor musical drama Texas.

Canyon is home to many popular attractions, including the largest history museum in the State of Texas, the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum. Palo Duro Canyon State Park, located just 12 miles from Canyon, is also referred to as the “Grand Canyon” of Texas. It is the second largest canyon in the United States and offers camping, picnicking, hiking, horseback riding, and most famously sets the stage for the world-renowned, TEXAS. Most recently the park was chosen as the #1 mountain biking destination in the state.

The vibrant Historic Downtown Square in Canyon bustles with businesses and offers a variety of specialty shops, quaint restaurants, historic buildings, professional offices, nightlife and the beautifully restored Randall County Courthouse.  The Historic Downtown Square is a perfect venue for many annual community events such as the July 4th Celebration & Hometown Independence Day Parade, Canyon Farmer's Market, Canyon Main Street's summer concert series, Movie Nights and Christmas on the Square.

Canyon Schools

The Canyon Independent School District serves two communities, Canyon and Amarillo, in Randall County of the Texas Panhandle. The district covers a large area, which encompasses 732 square miles. The north end of the district has 8 campuses in south Amarillo that offer immediate access to city amenities, while those in the city of Canyon offer a small-town atmosphere with easy access to the city. In the city of Canyon there are 5 campuses, and 2 campuses are located in between the two cities.
The Canyon ISD community is well known for its commitment to children and education. Within district attendance boundaries, new homes and new neighborhoods abound. Many new families move into the Canyon ISD attendance area because of the reputation of the schools and the quality of life found here. The school district is a learning community, providing opportunities for all students and staff to reach their learning potentials.
